Thursday January 26, 2023

Dear beautiful families,

This week:
* We have finished learning our dance, and now we are polishing it. We will keep practicing and present it at the February assembly.
* This week is Literacy week and we have been guessing mystery readers. We also drew a favourite book, character or reading spot on a little circle. Ms. Bell is going to put the whole school's circles on the bulletin board outside the library. This afternoon we are having the read-a-thon. You could read with a buddy, or your siblings, or just read by yourself. Half of the people in our school will go to the gym to read for 30 minutes, and then the other half of the people in our school will go.
* We got postcards from Finland and the United States. We sent postcards to Taiwan, U.S.A. and Japan. We learned that Finland has a lot of Northern Lights. The Northern Lights come from the sun. When the particles pop they make colour. From outer space the northern lights look like a ring around the North Pole and the southern lights look like a ring around the South Pole. In Finland they are also a big fan of the Moomins! We also learned that Taiwan is a really small country but they have a lot of people there.
* In gym we played Zombie Tag, Diamond Tag, Octopus, Angry Cats and Everybody's It.
* In math we are still working on multiplication. We can play the math game "Knock It Off" to practice. The regular ones are 2, 5, and 10. If you want to challenge yourself you can play 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 or 9!
* In handwriting this week we learned the c and the a.
* In music we learned how to play steel tongue drums. We used them to play poison pattern.
* In STEM we listened to the book The Duckling Gets a Cookie?! and made Lego characters from books. After we made one character from a book then we could make anything we wanted (as long as it's appropriate!)

We hope you have a lovely day!

Friday January 20, 2023

Dear lovely families,

This week:

*We made some fantastic art. In Asia, lots of countries celebrate Lunar New Year (Japan, China, South Korea, Malaysia and more). This year is the year of the rabbit so we made rabbit lanterns. We used black paper and pastels.

* On Wednesday we made German cookies. We got a postcard from Germany and it had the baking recipe on it. All of us got to come up and either add some stuff or mix up the ingredients. Then we put it in the fridge. Then Mrs. Marta rolled it out flat with the rolling pin and we used a star cookie cutter to make a cookie. Then Mrs. Marta cooked them at lunch time. In the afternoon, we decorated them with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. Then of course, we ate them. They were delicious. But then... something terrible happened... when we went outside someone came in our class and stole Mr. Marta's cookie! Now he is very sad 🙁. Mrs. Marta emailed the recipe home so you can try it at home if you like!
* In Science, we used Chatterpix on the iPads. We took a picture of something and then we made a mouth. We recorded our voices saying the properties of our object (softness, state of matter, smoothness, size, etc.). On Chatterpix it looks like the object is saying the things we recorded ourselves saying. You only have 30 seconds to say your whole thing! Mrs. Marta let us put 3 stickers and one frame on it.
* In gym we played: Angry Cats, Diamond Tag, Zombie Tag, and Octopus. We practiced shooting the basketball into the hoop. We also practiced our dance. We ALMOST know the whole thing now. We will perform it at the February assembly if we are ready (which we probably will be).
* In math we are still working on multiplication. This week we played "Knock it off" with 5X and 2X. You can figure out the answers by skip counting.
* In our book Wild Robot we just finished chapter 45. Roz and Brightbill went to the robot gravesite in chapter 45.
* In STEM Ms. Bell read us a story and then told us to make animals from the Chinese Zodiac out of Lego. If you didn't want to do Lego you could colour one of the animals.
* In music we finished making our pockets for "Canada in my Pocket".
* We got postcards from Germany and South Korea this week.

Friday January 13, 2023

 Dear amazing families,

This week:

* We started practicing a dance with Mr. Marta's class. When we have learned the whole dance and are really good at it we will perform it at an assembly. We will let you know the date when we know it, so you can come watch if you want. The dance is to the song "Can't Stop the Feeling".

* In math, we started learning about multiplication. In multiplication there are "groups of". For example if you have 5 ice cream cones with 6 scoops each... that is 5 groups of 6... or 5X6 which equals 30.

* In gym (besides dancing) we also played: Zombie Tag, practiced dribbling and shooting the basketball, played Octopus, played Pirate Battle, and played Angry Cats.

* This week in Sporcle we named 88/197 countries. That is our best score yet!

* In science we are learning about matter and the properties of matter. Some of the properties of matter are: if it is' magnetic, the colour, the texture, the size, the shape, if it is soft or hard, and if it is opaque (not see through), translucent (sort of see through) or transparent (see through).

* We learned a very cool word today called triskaidekaphobia. It means when you are afraid of the number 13. The word has 17 letters!

* This week we got a postcard from Germany. The postcard was in German, but we translated it. We also got a postcard from Italy. It was from E.R.'s aunt and uncle. AND we got a postcard from Jordan.

* In music we listened to a song called "Canada in my Pocket". Then we made pockets. We are going to put paper money in the pockets.

* In STEM we used Lego. We made creations with one colour. When we showed it to Miss Bell then we could make something else that didn't have to be one colour.

We hope you have a terrific weekend!

Friday January 6, 2023

 Dear wonderful families,

This week we:

* In Art we made owls in the African Tribal Art style. We have been doing the project in steps. We are adding a bunch of patterns to it. It is made out of a whole bunch of easy shapes. We outlined with black felt and today we are going to add colour.

* We were going to finish some of our Life Cycle Projects today... BUT... the ipads reset over night and the work is gone. We are hoping that they can restore the work because we don't want to start over.

* This week in STEM we were building Lego structures. First we started with the first letter of our name. Then we could build whatever we wanted.

* This week we got a second postcard from L.S.'s Grandmother in Japan. We also got a postcard from I.S.H.'s student's family that live in Madrid Spain. We also got a postcard from a new country we haven't seen yet... Slovakia.

* In Music we had a teacher named Mr. S. He brought in his electric guitar.

* In gym we played Freeze Dance, Disco Tag, we practiced dribbling basketballs, we played Everyone's It tag. We are going to start practicing a dance.

* Mrs. Marta started reading a book to us called The Wild Robot. It is about a robot that came crashing to an island. The robot is learning about things on the island. The robot was trying to camouflage by covering herself with mud, leaves and flowers. The robot's name was Roz.

* All the grade 3s and the grade 2s that wanted to started handwriting this week. We learned the lowercase e and l.

We hope you have a special and wonderful weekend!

From,

Mrs. Marta's unique and special students.
