Friday March 4, 2022

Dear spectacular parents,

This week we:

* Are having gym this afternoon.
We don't know what we will be doing yet...

* In outdoor ed. on Wednesday we learned about scat. We learned about deer, bear, cougar and wolf scat. We saw that different kind of animals have different kinds of scat. On Friday, we had a substitute teacher named Mr. Dhillon. We got to play on the back playground for the whole time!

* This week we have brain bins and our carpet back!!!! At brain bin time we can choose a brain bin or a quiet desk activity.

* In science we did observations of pennies after we put vinegar on them. After one day, the pennies started turning bluish-greenish. When we poured the vinegar some of the pennies got shiny. Some of the pennies turned green, some clean, some got dirty and some turned gold. Some of the pennies, the coating started to come off.

* On Thursday we did GoNoodle. We did: Run the Red Carpet, Raise the Roof, Little Green Froggy, Cat Party and then to calm down we did Light as a Feather.

* In Social Studies we learned a lot of things about Inuit people living in Nunavut. We learned some games they play. One game is the high-kick. They jump with two feet (7 feet high!) and kick a seal stuffie. Another game they play is the blanket toss. They play because they use this to try to spot whales. Food is very expensive in Nunavut. 10 pouches of Kool-aid is $36.00!!! One lemon was $10.00!!!

* In math this week we started working on "Expanded form" for addition. We did whiteboards and teacher table. It looks like this:

 34

+23

50

+7

57

* In math we learned the game "Ten More Than".

* At lunch time we are reading The Wild Robot Escapes. Before we read this one, we read The Wild Robot. In The Wild Robot Escapes, Roz the Wild Robot is trying to escape from Hilltop Farm.

Friday Feb 25, 2022

 Dear spectacular parents,

This week:

* We had outdoor ed. We played a lot of games. One of the games was "camouflage". Another game was "Fox and Squirrel."

* This week we had a bonus gym on Thursday. We played "Everybody's It" and "Jewel Thief". Today is P.Z.'s birthday gym. He hasn't decided yet what we are doing.

* This week in math we made a graph about fun things to do with your family.

* This week we learned some things about Inuit culture. One thing was that people from Norway paddled over and met with the Inuit 1000 years ago. We also learned that a bowhead whale could feed a whole community for a year. We also saw a video of two Inuit ladies doing throat singing!

Inuit Throat Singing

*In science we learned about physical and chemical changes. One way to tell the difference is a physical change can be undone, and a chemical change can't. An example of a physical change is - when you break a watermelon into little pieces it is still a watermelon. An example of a chemical change is - baking a cake (you can't unbake a cake!).

* We haven't been having book club. But Mrs. Marta hopes we can start it again really soon!

* We have been doing A LOT of writing!

Thursday Feb. 17, 2021

Dear wonderful families,

This week we:

* Are making a kindness board in the hallway. We are making pictures and drawing pictures about being kind. This is what it looks like so far:

 * Worked on our printing and handwriting. The grade 2s are doing printing, and the grade 3s are doing printing and handwriting. The grade 2s can also do handwriting if they want.

* We started Outdoor ed. with "Everybody's It" tag. We went to Oaklands Green. Ms. Sloboda showed us a raccoon nest in a tree.

* In science we did an experiment. We learned what would happen when you put a candy heart in different liquids. The vinegar was the only liquid that didn't dissolve the candy heart (even after a few days). We haven't tried coffee yet. We think it might melt because the coffee is hot. We saw the candy heart in the soda water dissolved really fast and made a lot of bubbles.

* At lunch we started reading the book The Wild Robot Escapes.

* During quiet desk activity a lot of people are making paper people. They are naming them like their own names but a little bit different.

* In math we did a "Valentine's Bar Graph". Eating chocolates had the most votes. Reading cards had zero people choose it.

Friday Feb. 11, 2022

To our marvelous parents,

This week we:

* Made chalk art. First we made a city skyline on paper. Then we cut it out and taped it to our paper. Above the skyline we used chalk to make it look like a sunset. To blend the colours we used our finger.

* This week we had 2 birthdays. O.S. and S.A. In S.A.'s gym she chose Dungeon Ball and O.S. chose stores.

* For writing Mrs. Marta made a bad story. (Well it wasn't bad it was just boring!). We helped her fix it by adding more details and used descriptive words. Mrs. Marta calls that "jazzing it up".

* We also made Inukshuk art. First we drew an Inukshuk. Then we used bright colours to make the background. It was in the style of Ted Harrison.

* In Social Studies we are learning about Inuit culture. This week we learned some Inuktitut.  Here is the Inuktitut alphabet song:

Inuktitut Alphabet Song

We also read some stories about Inuit culture. Some animals in the Arctic are: caribou, arctic char, arctic hare, beluga whale and the polar bear.

* Today in gym we are going to practice throwing.

* In math Mrs. Marta called us up to the table to do partitioning. She was pretty impressed with how good we are getting!

* In outdoor ed. we worked on our bird booklet.

* In art today we made Valentine's bags for Monday. They look like robots in honour of "The Wild Robot". If we are bringing Valentines we need to bring them on Monday.

Friday January 28, 2022

 Dear wonderful families,

This week:

* In math we got to level 4 of partitioning. We also did a super-infinity-mega-hard challenge question 2 times!

* Today in gym we are going to do "Stores". We voted what we would do. It was a close call between Dungeon Ball and Stores... but Stores won.

* We have still been doing Quiet Desk Activity instead of Brain Bins.

* In Music we used ribbons to do actions.

* In Science we talked about Properties of Matter. Some properties of matter are: state (solid, liquid or gas), does it dissolve in liquid, size, length, weight, colour, shape, and volume. We used the iPads to make a Chatterkids video about the properties of an object. We wrote a script, took a picture of the object, recorded a voice message and then put stickers on it.

* We are still reading The Wild Robot at lunch time. In the story the robot, Roz, loses her leg. Mrs. Marta dressed up as Roz today!

* In Social Studies we started talking about the Inuit Culture. We started by making a list of all the things we want to know. The list of questions is VERY VERY BIG!

* In writing we are thinking of descriptive words. For example, for the word "big" we came up with: gigantic, humongous, mega, and huge. For the word good we came up with: spectacular, marvelous, and splendid. Today we are doing "mad". O.L. already suggested we put "fed up".

* In Outdoor Ed. we found a sit spot. We just relaxed and sat and listened to nature. No talking!

* Today was "Dress up as your favourite book character." At recess, if you were dressed up you could go take a group photo in the courtyard.

Friday January 21, 2022

 Dear families,

This week:

* We did math. In math we got new sheets to work on. We practiced partitioning. We have two numbers. We stack them up... then we break them into parts. Then we put them back together again. We also talked about the doubles facts. The grade 3's had sheets with times (multiplication).

* Today we are having gym. We are going to play Dungeon Ball.

* This week we finished our Vietnamese Lantern Art. Here is a photo of it on our bulletin board in the classroom:

* In Outdoor ed. we learned about birds. We worked on our own booklet about birds that we are going to bring home (maybe in a few days). The author is our own selves.

* In Social Studies we did a sheet comparing Vietnam and Canada. We had to write 4 things: what is the same about Canada and Vietnam, what is different about Canada and Vietnam, what do you still wonder about Vietnam, and what is interesting about Vietnam.

* In science we talked about properties of matter. Some properties of matter are: state (solid, liquid, gas), size, does it float or sink, if it dissolves in water, shape, colour, weight, if it's magnetic and the heating and cooling point.

* Every day instead of Brain Bins we do Quiet Desk Activity. Some people at Quiet Desk Activity have to do their math (or finishing).

* In music we watched a video about a Viennese musical clock.

Friday January 14, 2022

 Dear super amazing families,

This week we:

* For art we drew Vietnamese silk lanterns. First we made a plan. Then we made the art. We could choose to use pastels, paints or markers.

* We are doing gym this afternoon. It is S.W.'s birthday gym and she is choosing Octopus Tag.

* This week instead of brain bins we did a quiet desk activity. We could draw, colour, play a card game by ourselves, making a craft or doing a word search.

* At recess we have a special area where we have to play. This week we played in the rock garden and bucketball area.

* This week we started reading The Wild Robot at lunch time.

* This week we are reading in our own classroom not with Mr. Marta.

* This week it is pizza day. Pizza day is very fun for our class because it is very yummy and delicious.

* In science we are learning about solids, liquids and gases.

* This week in finishing we did math.

* In social studies we learned about Vietnamese culture. One interesting this is that the government doesn't allow them to have religion. Sometimes in Vietnam they cook outside instead of inside. We also watched a video that showed their roads are very busy and they don't have any crosswalks. We also saw people selling things on the roads.

* In math we got new sheets to work on. We learned two new card games called "Tens" and "10, 20, 30". You can play these games with a deck of cards by yourself. We also worked on partitioning (adding big numbers).

* In Word Work we had to practice our no excuses words three times.

* Today at outdoor ed. we were learning about fungus and fungi and mushrooms that grow on trees. On two trees there was fungus that can kill the trees. It was taking all the good things out of the tree. It is not good for them. The trees cannot survive.

* In music we played music bingo. Mrs. Poulsen would tell us the symbols of the music pattern and we would have to find it on the bingo card.
