Friday April 21, 2023

 Dear fantastic families,

This week:

* We have been working on gymnastics. This morning the vault was four sections tall. We had to be very careful when we jumped! LT really wishes there was a trampoline.

* We are on chapter 81 out of 90 chapters of Wild Robot Escapes. HK really wants to tell us what happened... but she won't.

* We have started getting ready for Student Led Conferences. We will see you next week for our conferences on Wednesday or Thursday.

* In music we played some songs and steel tum drums.

* This week we started learning about shapes. First  we learned about 2D shapes (triangle, dodecagon, diamond, etc.) and 3D shapes (cube, rectangular prism, sphere, triangular prism, etc.).

* In Social Studies we learned about Alberta. Did you know in Alberta there is a mall called West Edmonton Mall. They have a waterpark and a carnival inside the mall! Did you know that Mrs. Marta is from Alberta? In Drumheller there is a museum with real dinosaur bones.

* We got a new Sporcle record of 136/197. We beat Mr. Marta's class!

* Yesterday we got a postcard from Hawaii. We watched a video about a big volcano in Hawaii.

* Our student teachers are teaching geometry, and Mrs. Marta calls her math "Marta Math" now.

* There is a book club reading the book Chicken Squad. Mrs. Marta calls them her book squad.

* This week we played with all the pieces in chess. These are the points the pieces are worth: pawn = 1, knight = 3, bishop = 3, rook = 5 and queen = 9. If you get a pawn to the other side it turns into a queen. If you get the other person's king you win the game.

We hope you have a magnificent weekend!

Friday April 14, 2023

 Dear marvelous families,

This week:

* In gymnastics we added two new stations. One was the bars. The other was the wall mats. There is a station called the springboard. You stay on it and  count to 2, then you jump off. There are three things we are working on in gymnastics: balances, jumps and travelling.

* In STEM we were using Ozobots. It reminds us of Roz from our book. If you put it on a black circle and press the on button for five seconds it will make cute noises. We made little trails for the Ozobots. We had to include an animals food, water, shelter and maybe a danger and the Ozobot followed the path.

* In math we have been working on the next ten and two subtraction strategies. The strategies are called place value and rounding up.

* In Sporcle this week we got 132 points!

* This morning we had a dance party with the special rainbow light. The songs we danced to were "Can't Stop the Feeling" and "Believer".

* We have two new student teachers. Their names are Ms. Sofie and Ms. Melanie.

* This week we got a postcard from South Korea. Ms. Lee who works in our class brought the postcard from her teacher. She visited South Korea on Spring Break.

* In Social Studies this week we learned about British Columbia. We did a sheet where we write facts about it and draw pictures.

* At writing we have been doing "Jazz it up!". This is where you add more details and fancy words to a boring story.

We hope you have a fantastic weekend.

Thursday April 6, 2023

 Dear marvelous families,

This week:

* We got a new Sporcle record. This week we named 131 countries! If you don't know what Sporcle is, it is where we try to name all the countries in the world. There are 197 countries altogether.

* During STEM we were playing with little robots. We made paths with markers and the robots would follow the path. If it was blue, red or green the robot would turn that colour when it was on that square.

* In gym we are doing gymnastics for the whole month of April. We started with five stations. One of the stations was a springboard. Another station was a ladder, balance beam and two benches that you could do fire pull or walk on them. In one section there is a big yellow crash mat. There is also a station with a vault where you can jump over it. The last station was mats where you could do cartwheels and log rolls.

* In Social Studies we did a Canada sheet and we learned a lot of things about Canada. For instance, the capital city of Canada is called Ottawa. The leader of Canada is Justin Trudeau. We have a lot of animals in Canada like: polar bears, lynx, snowy owl, beavers, elk, cougars, cats, Arctic foxes, moose, wolves, and dogs.

* In Art we made spring flowers with watercolours. First we used the watercolours to make blobs. Then we painted the stems. Last we outlined with a skinny black sharpie. They are on the bulletin board outside our classroom if you want to see them.

* In music we played games like "Freddy the Frog". We also played Freeze Dance.

* In handwriting we did the letters v and y.

We hope you have a fantastic four day weekend!

Friday March 10, 2023

 Dear stupendous families,

This week:

* In STEM we did puzzles on the iPad that were about Holi. Holi is a celebration in India, where you crush up flowers and put it in the air it turns into colourful powder like magic. For the puzzles you can choose easy, medium and difficult.

* In Science we have being doing an experiment with pennies. We put vinegar on the pennies to see what would happen. There are different kinds of pennies (American, Canadian, Singapore, old pennies, shiny pennies, dirty pennies). Some of the pennies turned blue, some turned green, one turned grey, one turned yellow and most of them turned rusty. Most of the shiny ones turned non-shiny. Some of the pennies left marks on the paper towels they were on.

* In gym we played Zombie Tag, Dungeon Ball and Angry Cats. We also practiced throwing and catching and moving to an open space.

* In Social Studies we are making book about the Inuit Culture. You can pick your own title. Most people are on rough copy and some people are on good copy. You have to do four or more pages about different topics.

* This week we got two postcards. One was from Ohio and one was from Delhi, India. Today we are sending seven postcards because we have only sent 30 and have received 35. We need to send more to get more.

We hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Friday March 3, 2023

 Dear fantastic families,

This week:

* We have working on our Inuit books. We made a title page. You are also going to make four pages or more with facts about the Inuit culture. First you do a rough copy and then you do a good copy.

* This morning we had a dance party with colourful lights. The songs we had were "Happy" and "Can't Stop the Feeling".

* In gym we played Zombie Tag, Cat and Mouse and Octopus.

* On Wednesday we got a new student in our class. He came to us from India.

* In STEM we made Lego for 100's day.  We also made stuff with snow in it. For example, we could make a snowman or a mountain out of Lego. Ms. Bell was going to read us a book... but she forgot and gave it to a kindergarten student!

* On Tuesday the grade 3 students started learning about division, while the grade 2 students went to a presentation in the gym.

* In Math we made a graph about people's favourite ice cream flavours.

* In Science we learned about the difference between chemical changes and physical changes. In a chemical change you can't change it back. For example, you can't unbake a cake. In a physical change it stays the same. For example, if you chop wood it is still wood. OR... if you break a window it is still a window.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Thursday February 16, 2023

 Dear awesome families,

This week:

* In gym we played Cat and Mouse, Diamond Tag, Disco Tag and we practiced our dance.

* In STEM we made these really cool buttons that you could pin onto your clothes. Ms. Bell had this machine to make the buttons. The buttons were for Pink Shirt Day. We are going to make bigger ones in our next STEM class.

* Two days ago we started making bookmarks.

* For Valentine's Day we made bags that had robots on them like Roz. On Valentine's day people put candy, games and cards in the bag.

* Today we finished The Wild Robot. We will read the next book called The Wild Robot Escapes. There was a sad part at the end and Mrs. Marta almost started crying.

* We got two postcards this week. One was from Germany and one was from France.

* In Science we did an experiment to see if candy hearts would dissolve in different liquids. First we checked water, club soda and vinegar. Then we put baking soda in. In the afternoon we tried boiling water and then came up with a bunch of ideas to try other liquids. We tried, Mrs. Marta's cold tea, diet coke, and milk. We also combined some of the liquids. Then we tried to dissolve smarties and chocolate.

* This week we started learning to play chess. This week we just used the pawns. We played with a partner. The goal of the pawn game is that whoever gets the most pawns to the other side wins. When you capture with a pawn, you go one space diagonally. If a pawn is in front of you, you can't move it. Also on Thursday's we get to do chess club at lunch recess.

* We learned the letter m in handwriting this week. We also reviewed the letters we already learned.

We hope you have a great long weekend!

Friday February 10, 2023

 Dear amazing families,

This week:

* It was L.H.'s birthday. For his birthday gym he chose Dungeon Ball and Zombie Tag. They said happy birthday to him on the announcements. L.H. picked the book Seeing Red for his birthday story.

* This morning we had a dance party. It was our second dance party. One song was "I Like to Move it!". Almost all of us tried to do "the worm". Most of us were in a conga line. Today Mrs. Marta brought her special light for the dance party.

* Every day when we come to school we have to fix some mistakes in our daily schedule.

* For Sporcle this week we got 118 countries! We are trying to get 197. All of them!

* Yesterday we made our Valentine bags. We made them look like robots like Roz. We also added hearts. They are super beautiful. Some of us, when we were finished, made bags for the teachers or students who were absent. L.T. got to make Mrs. Marta's bag for her.

* In Social Studies we are studying the Inuit Culture. We found out they use spears to go fishing and that they live way up North in Canada. They also sew sealskin into some of their clothing. We read a book called Fishing with Grandma and on the first page it told us how to say Grandma in their language -- anaantasiaq. They also showed us how they use sticks to get the ice out to go ice fishing. They use ATV's to travel across the bumpy ground.

We are writing facts about the Inuit on paper, because later we are going to make a book.

* We keep practicing our dance. Mrs. Marta thinks we get better every time. We hope you can come watch us at the assembly at the end of the month.

We hope you have a wonderful day!
