Friday April 8, 2022

 Dear amazing parents,

This week:

* We did a lot of Social Studies this week. We worked on our Inuit book and started learning about Canada. We watched videos, looked at a website, and asked Professor Google some questions about Canada. After we found our information we had to write down important facts.

- Canada is famous for poutine.

- The maple leaf is not an official logo (it is an unofficial logo).

- Canada is the second biggest country in the world.

- Canada is known for it's people always saying "sorry".

* We are doing gym this afternoon. We are doing stations.

* This week everyone got a book club. The books are: Alvin Ho:allergic to girls, school and other scary things, Chicken Squad, Clint McCool, and Nate the Great.

* This afternoon we are going to have 50 minutes of finishing. We have so much work to finish!

* In outdoor ed. we cleaned up the courtyard. We pulled weeds and picked up leaves.

* This week we have a new music teacher because Mrs. Poulsen had a baby. Our new music teacher is Mr. Day.

Friday March 18, 2022

 Dear fantastic perfect families,

This week:

* Today we have gym. We are celebrating E.B's birthday. His birthday is on Spring Break. He is choosing Dungeon Ball for his birthday game.

* In S.S. we kept working on our Inuit books. Some people are finished and today O.S. shared his book with the class.

* In Science we tried to move an aluminum can with a balloon. We rubbed the balloon on our hair to create static electricity. Then we tried to use the static electricity to make the can move. We had races to see who could make it go fastest. The Cookie Monster team won. (That was H.C. and P.Z.). The "Static Electricity" team (Y.D. and B.K.) were actually fastest, but the Cookie Monster team got moving first.

* We had our first assembly in the gym yesterday. Only the grade 2 and 3 went to our assembly. The grade 5 strings students performed for us. They had cellos, violins and violas. They played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in peanut butter sticky form (that means ti tis and tas). All of the grade 2 and 3 students sang O Canada at the beginning of the assembly.

* Yesterday we brought our report cards home. Mrs. Marta would like us to return the envelopes to her after Spring Break. Mrs. Marta told us she took HOURS to write them!

* Yesterday we learned about Michelangelo. We had to practice doing art on the bottom of our desks. Michelangelo painted the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel for four years.

* We are very excited because of after gym today it will be Spring Break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a fun Spring Break!

The awesome students in Mrs. Marta's class.

Friday March 11, 2022

 Dear good parents,

This week:

* We have gym this afternoon. We are going to practice throwing at a target and then play two games.

* In Social Studies we started to make our Inuit books. Everyone has to do at least four pages. B.K. already has 10 pages!!!!!!!!!!

* We have been working on a very hard art this week. It is of the aurora borealis. We have to make an Arctic animal looking at the northern lights. We are using soft oil pastels. They are very hard to blend. We did a rough copy first to practice. Then we are doing a good copy.

* This week we jazzed up a very boring story that Mrs. Marta wrote. The story was about a bunny who needs to find his carrots.

* In math

* In outdoor ed. we learned about animal tracks. We also played a game called "Banana Peel". It had three taggers. When you get caught you stand with your hands over your head like a banana. To get free someone has to gently open your hands.

* H.H. brought in her pennies to show us. She put vinegar on hers at home. They turned very blue and green. Some of the pennies had white stuff on it, but now that is turning light blue and silver. We think hers turned more green because she only put vinegar on one time. The pennies turn green because the oxygen reacts with the copper in the penny. Then it makes blue or green stuff called malachite. The vinegar makes it go faster.

Have a fun weekend!

Friday March 4, 2022

Dear spectacular parents,

This week we:

* Are having gym this afternoon.
We don't know what we will be doing yet...

* In outdoor ed. on Wednesday we learned about scat. We learned about deer, bear, cougar and wolf scat. We saw that different kind of animals have different kinds of scat. On Friday, we had a substitute teacher named Mr. Dhillon. We got to play on the back playground for the whole time!

* This week we have brain bins and our carpet back!!!! At brain bin time we can choose a brain bin or a quiet desk activity.

* In science we did observations of pennies after we put vinegar on them. After one day, the pennies started turning bluish-greenish. When we poured the vinegar some of the pennies got shiny. Some of the pennies turned green, some clean, some got dirty and some turned gold. Some of the pennies, the coating started to come off.

* On Thursday we did GoNoodle. We did: Run the Red Carpet, Raise the Roof, Little Green Froggy, Cat Party and then to calm down we did Light as a Feather.

* In Social Studies we learned a lot of things about Inuit people living in Nunavut. We learned some games they play. One game is the high-kick. They jump with two feet (7 feet high!) and kick a seal stuffie. Another game they play is the blanket toss. They play because they use this to try to spot whales. Food is very expensive in Nunavut. 10 pouches of Kool-aid is $36.00!!! One lemon was $10.00!!!

* In math this week we started working on "Expanded form" for addition. We did whiteboards and teacher table. It looks like this:

 34

+23

50

+7

57

* In math we learned the game "Ten More Than".

* At lunch time we are reading The Wild Robot Escapes. Before we read this one, we read The Wild Robot. In The Wild Robot Escapes, Roz the Wild Robot is trying to escape from Hilltop Farm.

Friday Feb 25, 2022

 Dear spectacular parents,

This week:

* We had outdoor ed. We played a lot of games. One of the games was "camouflage". Another game was "Fox and Squirrel."

* This week we had a bonus gym on Thursday. We played "Everybody's It" and "Jewel Thief". Today is P.Z.'s birthday gym. He hasn't decided yet what we are doing.

* This week in math we made a graph about fun things to do with your family.

* This week we learned some things about Inuit culture. One thing was that people from Norway paddled over and met with the Inuit 1000 years ago. We also learned that a bowhead whale could feed a whole community for a year. We also saw a video of two Inuit ladies doing throat singing!

Inuit Throat Singing

*In science we learned about physical and chemical changes. One way to tell the difference is a physical change can be undone, and a chemical change can't. An example of a physical change is - when you break a watermelon into little pieces it is still a watermelon. An example of a chemical change is - baking a cake (you can't unbake a cake!).

* We haven't been having book club. But Mrs. Marta hopes we can start it again really soon!

* We have been doing A LOT of writing!

Thursday Feb. 17, 2021

Dear wonderful families,

This week we:

* Are making a kindness board in the hallway. We are making pictures and drawing pictures about being kind. This is what it looks like so far:

 * Worked on our printing and handwriting. The grade 2s are doing printing, and the grade 3s are doing printing and handwriting. The grade 2s can also do handwriting if they want.

* We started Outdoor ed. with "Everybody's It" tag. We went to Oaklands Green. Ms. Sloboda showed us a raccoon nest in a tree.

* In science we did an experiment. We learned what would happen when you put a candy heart in different liquids. The vinegar was the only liquid that didn't dissolve the candy heart (even after a few days). We haven't tried coffee yet. We think it might melt because the coffee is hot. We saw the candy heart in the soda water dissolved really fast and made a lot of bubbles.

* At lunch we started reading the book The Wild Robot Escapes.

* During quiet desk activity a lot of people are making paper people. They are naming them like their own names but a little bit different.

* In math we did a "Valentine's Bar Graph". Eating chocolates had the most votes. Reading cards had zero people choose it.

Friday Feb. 11, 2022

To our marvelous parents,

This week we:

* Made chalk art. First we made a city skyline on paper. Then we cut it out and taped it to our paper. Above the skyline we used chalk to make it look like a sunset. To blend the colours we used our finger.

* This week we had 2 birthdays. O.S. and S.A. In S.A.'s gym she chose Dungeon Ball and O.S. chose stores.

* For writing Mrs. Marta made a bad story. (Well it wasn't bad it was just boring!). We helped her fix it by adding more details and used descriptive words. Mrs. Marta calls that "jazzing it up".

* We also made Inukshuk art. First we drew an Inukshuk. Then we used bright colours to make the background. It was in the style of Ted Harrison.

* In Social Studies we are learning about Inuit culture. This week we learned some Inuktitut.  Here is the Inuktitut alphabet song:

Inuktitut Alphabet Song

We also read some stories about Inuit culture. Some animals in the Arctic are: caribou, arctic char, arctic hare, beluga whale and the polar bear.

* Today in gym we are going to practice throwing.

* In math Mrs. Marta called us up to the table to do partitioning. She was pretty impressed with how good we are getting!

* In outdoor ed. we worked on our bird booklet.

* In art today we made Valentine's bags for Monday. They look like robots in honour of "The Wild Robot". If we are bringing Valentines we need to bring them on Monday.
